iPhone VoIP App - Bria Setup Guide

Note: this guide is designed for the Counterpath Bria iPhone VoIP app as run on an iPhone 4. Setup on other iPhone versions should be very similar but may differ in some minor respects.

Download the Bria app

You can download the Bria VoIP app directly through your iPhone using the App Store, or via iTunes running on your PC. The Bria app costs $7.99 as of the time of this writing.

Turn on 3G Calling

Start the Bria VoIP app. You may receive a "Phone Services Error" stating that 3G calling is not currently available. This can be corrected by pressing the "Settings" button at the bottom right of the app, and then choosing "Preferences," and finally enabling the "Allow 3G Calls" option. See screenshot below.

Set up Your Account

You will then see a message stating that you need to have a SIP account configured and enabled. Press the "+" (plus sign) icon to add an account. You will need to enter the following values.

Account Name

You may name this account anything you like; the Account Name value is just for your own reference. It does not affect the Bria app's functionality.

Display As

This value is used to set outgoing Caller ID. Please leave it blank as Easy Office Phone will set your caller ID at the server level and allow you to change it if needed.

Username

Please enter the username provided to you upon setup (e.g. myusername-225).

Password

Enter the password provided to you upon setup (e.g. PASS1234).

Domain

Enter sip.enhancedvoip.net.

Enabled

Leave this value as "Off" for now as we will be making further changes before enabling the account.

Set up your Voicemail

You can enable a speed-dial option for checking voicemail. Set the "VM Number" to the following: *98 followed by your extension number, with no spaces. As an example, if your extension number is 225, your VM Number should be *98225. See below.

Enable Your Account

Now return to the "Enable" button and turn it to "On." Your account status should now show as "Registered." If you later need to modify your Account settings, you will need to press the "Unregister" button first and then make your changes.

Obtain g729 codec (recommended)

We recommend the lower-bandwidth g729 codec, especially for calls over the 3G network. As this codec uses less bandwidth, it produces more consistent performance over 3G, particularly when travelling out of concentrated urban areas. To obtain g729, press Settings, then Premium Features, then click the codec button to purchase it from the App Store. You will need your App Store login information to complete the purchase.

Once you have completed the download, we recommend choosing Settings, then Advanced, then Cell Audio Codecs. Ensure that g729a is enabled and then disable all other codecs. This will force the phone to only use the g729 codec which should produce the best results over the 3G network.

Set "Run in Background" (optional)

You may wish to change the "Run in Background" option depending on how frequently you use Bria and how concerned you are about conserving iPhone battery power. To review or change this setting, press the "Settings" button, then choose Preferences, then set "Run in Background" to either on or off.
